Wayne N. Mathis has a B.Sc. in zoology from Brigham Young University (1969), Ph.D. in entomology from Oregon State University (1976). Since 2011, he has been a Curator Emeritus with the Department of Entomology, Smithsonian Institution, where he was Curator of Diptera until his retirement.

 

He was head of the Department of Entomology three times (1981-1987, 2001-2004, 2010-2011), was the advisor to 10 postdoctoral, 7 Ph.D., and 2 predoctoral students and numerous interns. While at the Smithsonian he was an Adjunct Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland.

 

His research interests include the discovery of relationships among the diversity of beach and shore flies and how these relationships impinge on various aspects of historical biogeography, and he has over 200 research publications. He has conducted field work throughout much of the world and has been an associate editor or on editorial boards for several scientific journals.

 

He has received funding from several sources, including NSF, CanaColl, American Philosophical Society, CNPq, and the National Park Service, as well as internal Smithsonian funding sources.
