The area covered by this Manual includes the South American continent and its continental islands. This includes Fernando de Noronha, São Pedro, São Paulo, Martin Vaz, South Trinidad Islands; Falklands (Malvinas), South Georgia, Sandwiches and South Orkneys, Galapagos, Juan Fernandez, Clipperton, Cocos and Revillagigedo Islands. The geographical delimitation of this Manual is intended to avoid unnecessary overlap with the recently published Manual of Central American Diptera (Brown et al., 2009, 2010). South America is bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the west and by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and east; Central America and Caribbean Sea lies in the northern end of the continent. Antarctica, just opposite the southern end of South America, is also part of the scope of this Manual (Papavero 1966).
